A draft survey is a method used to determine the weight of cargo based on the difference in a ship's displacement (draft). This method relies on Archimedes' principle and ship theory. Draft surveying holds particular significance when loading bulk cargoes, where even a minor error in weight determination can lead to significant financial losses. Accounting for the total weight of cargo loaded into a ship's holds is crucial, as even a slight percentage deviation can have substantial consequences.
In 2021, the Russian Federation introduced the national standard GOST R 59145-2020 Standard "Methods for calculating cargo weight based on ship draft," emphasizing the importance of using precise methods to determine cargo weight for the safety and efficiency of maritime transportation. This standard serves as the basis for conducting precise measurements and calculations, ultimately contributing to risk reduction and optimization of the cargo loading and transportation process. It also defines the stages of measurement, calculation, and documentation in accordance with Federal Law No. 162-FZ "On Standardization in the Russian Federation."

Calculating Average Draft
Determining displacement has its peculiarities known to experienced draft surveyors. It is especially important to accurately calculate the vessel's average draft, accounting for corrections to fore/aft perpendiculars, hull bending, list/trim corrections, and correct determination of the density of onboard/ballast water, among other factors. A thorough inspection of the vessel and consideration of all factors influencing its displacement are necessary before commencing loading.
Ice Conditions Consideration
An experienced draft surveyor must consider various factors such as wind, waves, atmospheric precipitation, low temperatures, ice, diurnal temperature variations, tides, and currents. Additionally, the vessel's structural characteristics and age are crucial factors.
Surveyor's Technical Equipment
To perform draft surveying tasks accurately, a surveyor requires portable computing devices, calibrated measuring instruments (densitometer, tape measure, remote electronic thermometer, adjustable sampling device), a powerful flashlight, indicator paste-gels, and floating devices for monitoring the ship's draft from the external side.
